Auld - old

Bairn or bairnie - child
Blether or Blather - talk a lot
Bogle - a bad fairy or bogey manB
Bog oak - very hard oak wood that has been found in a bog or marsh 
Borage - a herb with blue flowers. Tastes of cucumber
Bothy - shack or hut
Bracken - a kind of tough-stemmed fern
Breeks- trousers
Burn - a creek or stream


Cauld - cold
Cairn - pile of rocks, often used as a landmark
Cap stone - the stone or rock on top of a cairn
Carn - an old word that means the same as cairn

Clan - extended family group
Clover - plants with leaves divided into three parts. Flowers usually pink or white.
Coracle - a small, very light boat. Round in shape.
Crag - rocky peaks or cliffs
Cromach - (say it CROM-ack) a staff or crook

Daft - silly
Daftie - a silly person

Fae - fairy
Fash - to pester, worry or annoy
Fauna - animals, birds, fish etc
Fee - fairy or fae; also a price
Flax - Tall, grass-like plants with blue flowers. The stems can be spun into linen
Flora - trees, flowers and other plants
Form - a hare's nest

Giftie - a gift

Glen - a valley with a stream 
Grand-dam - grandmother
Green - a grassy area in the middle of a village


Hag - witch
Hare - animal that looks like a rabbit with longer ears and legs
Heather - Group of plants with purple, pink or white bell-shaped flowers

Kilt - a pleated skirt with a tartan pattern

Lad or laddie - boy (not necessarily young)
Lair - den or hideout
Laird or Lairdie - another word for lord
Lamb's wool - wool from young sheep
Lass or lassie - girl
Loch - a lake. Say it like this. LOCK


Marigold - plants with yellow or orange flowers
Marsh - wetlands, bogs
Mathering, mithering - babbling on
Moor - open ground 


Oak - a very long-living tree that grows from an acorn
Oxalis - a plant related to clover
Petra - to do with rocks
Pipes - bagpipes
Plaid - either a tartan pattern or a kind of long shawl worn with a kilt

Plat - flat piece of rock
Platter - large flat plate or dish

Selkies - seal people
Singular - strange or "only one"
Snare - a drum
Sporran - a kind of pouch or pocket


Tabor - a small drum
Thistles - prickly plants with purple flowers
Thistledown - the fluffy seeds of thistles
Trefoil - plants in the clover family
Trews - trousers
Tunic - a loose top, worn over trews or a kilt or on its own


Walnut - a strong tree with eatable nuts
Wand - a slim branch or twig, sometimes used for magic
Wee - small

Willow - trees with flexible twigs that can be woven
